Nick Young Obituary, Death – Wadsworth Soccer Player Dies at 23 After Courageous Battle With Rare Cancer
Nicholas Anthony Young, affectionately known as Nick Young, passed away on October 13, 2026, at the age of 23 following a battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT), a rare and aggressive form of cancer. His death has left his family, friends, former teammates, colleagues, and the wider Ohio community mourning the loss of a young man remembered for his determination, faith, athletic achievements, and strong relationships.
Born into a loving family, Nick built a life around the people and activities that mattered most to him. Those who knew him will remember his commitment to sports, his appreciation for the outdoors, and the strength he demonstrated while facing a difficult illness.
Nick graduated from Wadsworth High School in 2021, where he spent four years as a member of the school’s soccer program. His dedication to athletics continued beyond high school, reflecting his competitive spirit and enthusiasm for staying active. He also enjoyed track and field, fitness, and other sporting activities.
After high school, Nick attended Baldwin Wallace University, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in finance and business administration. His academic achievements represented an important milestone as he worked toward building his professional future.
Following graduation, Nick worked for two years as a surety associate at Westfield Insurance. He balanced his professional responsibilities with the personal interests and relationships that brought meaning to his life.
Away from work and sports, Nick enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors, listening to music, particularly country music, and supporting Cleveland sports teams. He valued time with family and friends and cherished the traditions and shared experiences that brought his loved ones together. He was also a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Barberton, Ohio, where his Christian faith remained an important source of comfort throughout his illness.
Nick’s battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumor became a defining part of his final years. Despite the challenges associated with the rare cancer, he continued to demonstrate determination and a willingness to support others facing similar circumstances.
In June 2026, Nick participated in the Race to Cure Sarcoma, an event dedicated to raising awareness and supporting efforts to combat sarcoma. He also served as a guest speaker, sharing his experience to help others better understand the disease. His involvement reflected his desire to turn a deeply personal struggle into an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage others.
Nick is survived by his parents, Matt and Denise Young; his brother, Matthew; his girlfriend, Gillian Ryser; and extended family members and friends. His beloved dog, Ember, was also an important part of his life. His family and those closest to him now face the difficult task of navigating life without him while holding on to the memories they shared.
Visitation is scheduled for October 18, 2026, at Auble-Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home in Wadsworth, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on October 19 at Prince of Peace Parish in Barberton, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth.
As family and friends prepare to gather in remembrance, Nick’s life will be honored through the achievements he accomplished, the courage he demonstrated, and the relationships he built. His story has touched people who knew him personally as well as those who encountered his efforts to raise awareness about sarcoma.
Heartfelt condolences go out to Matt and Denise Young, his brother Matthew, Gillian Ryser, his extended family, friends, former teammates, and colleagues. May they find strength in one another and comfort in the memories that will remain with them.
Though Nicholas Anthony Young’s life ended at just 23, his dedication to sports, his faith, and his determination throughout his cancer journey remain important parts of his legacy. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
