Barrie Sketchley Obituary, Death - Longtime Rosedale Heights School of the Arts Principal Dies at 85

Barrie Sketchley, the longtime principal and founding leader of Rosedale Heights School of the Arts in Toronto, has died at the age of 85. His death was announced by the school community on October 14, 2026, prompting tributes from former students, parents, colleagues, and educators who remember his decades of service and dedication to young people.

Sketchley devoted more than six decades to education after beginning his teaching career in 1965. He spent 42 years in administration with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), including 34 years as principal of Rosedale Heights School of the Arts. His long career made him the board’s longest-serving principal.

Throughout his time at Rosedale Heights, Sketchley helped shape the school into a recognized centre for arts-focused education. He believed in giving students opportunities to explore their creativity and develop their individual talents, while helping create an environment where people from different backgrounds felt welcomed and included.

His approach to education extended beyond academic achievement. Sketchley valued students’ interests and artistic passions, and he was known for taking a personal interest in the young people who came through the school. His leadership helped foster a culture centered on creativity, acceptance, and encouragement.

In 2023, the Toronto School Administrators Association recognized Sketchley for his exceptional length of service as a principal. His influence at Rosedale Heights remained clear in 2025, when students and parents spoke out against a proposed transfer that would have moved him away from the school before his planned retirement. Following the community’s response, the board confirmed that he could remain at Rosedale Heights until his retirement in 2026.

Colleagues remembered Sketchley for his kindness, compassion, warmth, and sense of humor. He was known for his stories, his love of travel and ski trips, and the relationships he developed with students and staff. Current principal Joseph Ghassibe described him as a pioneer whose leadership empowered educators and helped make the school a place where students could feel included and affirmed.

Sketchley’s passing has brought sadness to the school community, where many former students and families credit him with making a lasting difference in their lives. His influence was not limited to the classroom or school administration; it was reflected in the culture he helped build and the people he encouraged over the years.

The cause of Barrie Sketchley’s death has not been publicly disclosed. A celebration of life for the Rosedale Heights community is planned for November 2026, with further details to be announced.

As former students, colleagues, and families remember Sketchley, his legacy lives on through the school he helped establish and the generations of young people he supported. Heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones and everyone mourning his loss.
